Who, What, When, Where, Why?

1. Who:
Who will I be serving?
I will be working with, primarily preschoolers. The slum children of Kibera will come to Ghetto Light, off the streets for school each day, but I am in hopes of starting a young women's bible study as well with women of all ages! Moms, ladies who have been affected by AIDS/HIVS, and teenagers.

2. What:
What will I be doing?
Teaching English, some social work, and working in any and every other way I can to help! Ghetto Light aims to teach children English so that these kids have a chance to overcome poverty! My prayer is that the Lord will use me in any and every area that he sees fits best with my abilities!

3.When:
When will I be departing?
I depart April 22nd! Less than a month away! I will return August 8th! So, I will be gone for a total of 3 and a 1/2 almost 4 months! My travel route is from Charlotte, to Atlanta, Atlanta to Amsterdam, and then finally Nairobi, Kenya. Once I arrive in Nairobi, I will spend two days at the AIM headquarters in Nairobi, for another brief orientation, which I am very thankful for considering this will help with jet lag :)

4. Where:
Where will I be serving?
I will be directly in the heart of East Africa! Kenya is on the coast of the Indian Ocean and is boardered by Uganda, Somalia, Ethiopia, and Tanzania. Luckily, I will be living and working near Nairobi, which is the capital of Kenya, and is a fairly civilized city! It is comforting to know that if anything were to happen (knock on wood) I would only be a few miles away from a hospital, the embassy, and the airport! However, I will be living in the slum, which is one of the poorest parts of the world. I will also be living with a native Kenyan family who runs Ghetto Light and there staff. The compound that they live on is gated and has a night guard. I also will have a roommate for the 1st 6 weeks while I'm there, who is from the United Kingdom, and has been to Nairobi before! We will also be working with other short term teams who will be visiting all through out the summer!

5. Why:
Why Go?
This is the number one question I have been asked by people since I found out I was going to Africa. There are many reasons as to why I want to go. One of them being, Jesus calls us to serve. He demands that we help the poor, sick, and brokenhearted, and more than anything, that is what my heart desires to do! Serving others brings me so much joy!! I also want this season of my life to be a time of growth, not only individually as a person, but as a Christian as well! I want to know Jesus more. I want my heart to break for him. I want to be brought out of my comfort zone. I want a change. I want a challenge. I want to explore a new way of life, I want to meet new people, and see new sights. I am so excited about this journey and the road ahead. I can not wait to experience all the Lord has in store for my life! God says that he blesses us when we are obident to his calling. Wither that is traveling around the world or traveling to the town over! We are to use our lives to bring him glory and for his goodness only! I know, without a shadow of doubt, that if I do not go now, I will regret it 50 years down the road and I do NOT want to look back on my life and wonder what if? Yes, I am scared, but I am more scared of staying home out of comfort and contentment and living a life of disobedience and missing out on part of Gods plan for my life! So, ready or not, here I go...
